Hypericum perforatum L. is a wild yellow-flowering plant from the Hypericaceae family, found across Europe and Central Asia. It is best known in natural health for its macerate — but this product is something entirely different: a true steam-distilled essential oil, rare, distinct, and with its own identity.

✨ Essential Oil vs. Macerate — Not the Same Product

This is the most important distinction to understand before using or recommending this oil. The two products share the same plant but are fundamentally different:

• St. John’s Wort Macerate — a vegetable oil (typically sunflower or olive) in which the flowering tops have been infused. Rich in hypericin (the red pigment), it is a carrier oil used topically for its soothing, anti-inflammatory skin properties. Widely available, deeply red in color, and well-documented.
• St. John’s Wort Essential Oil — a steam-distilled aromatic extract from the flowering tops. Light pink in color, volatile, concentrated, and food-grade. Its chemical profile (Methyl 2-octane, Alpha-pinene, Beta-pinene, Beta-caryophyllene, Germacrene D) is entirely different from the macerate. The two are not interchangeable.

⚠️ If you are looking for the red oil for topical skin use, that is the macerate — not this product. This essential oil is used diluted, aromatically, culinarily, and in targeted topical applications.

✨ Steam-Distilled vs. CO₂ Extract

A CO₂ extract of Hypericum perforatum also exists and is sometimes encountered in specialist cosmetic formulation. Key differences:

• Steam-distilled EO — volatile, aromatic, food-grade, therapy-grade. This is our product.
• CO₂ extract — richer in hypericin and heavier compounds; closer in profile to the macerate; used in cosmetic formulation, not in aromatherapy or culinary applications.

• Hypericum perforatum has been used medicinally since antiquity. Physicians of ancient Greece — including Dioscorides and Hippocrates — documented its use for wound healing, nerve pain, and inflammatory conditions.
• The name Hypericum derives from the Greek hyper (above) and eikon (image) — the plant was traditionally hung above doorways and icons to ward off evil spirits, particularly around the feast of St. John the Baptist (June 24th), which gave it its common name.

💡 What Sets It Apart

• The essential oil of Hypericum perforatum is genuinely rare — most of what is sold under the “St. John’s Wort oil” name is the macerate, not a distilled essential oil. True steam-distilled EO requires large quantities of flowering tops and yields very little — which explains both its rarity and its distinct chemical profile.
• Its dominant molecules — Methyl 2-octane, Alpha-pinene, Beta-pinene, Beta-caryophyllene, and Germacrene D — bear no resemblance to the hypericin-rich macerate. It is a different product in every meaningful sense: chemistry, color, use, and application method.
• Beta-caryophyllene, one of its key constituents, is a sesquiterpene also found in black pepper, clove, and copaiba — well-documented in modern research for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and notable as one of the few terpenes that interacts with the endocannabinoid system.
• In French aromatherapy tradition, Hypericum perforatum EO is cited for its affinity with the nervous system and mucous membranes — a profile that distinguishes it clearly from the macerate and positions it as a specialist oil for practitioners and informed users.
