🌸 Fine Lavender vs. Spike Lavender

Not all lavenders are created equal. Two species dominate aromatherapy practice — and understanding their differences is key to choosing the right oil for the right moment.

🌸 Fine Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — The Balance Oil

Fine lavender is the most versatile and gentle of all lavender species. Rich in linalool and linalyl acetate — two of the most studied calming compounds in aromatherapy — it works progressively and holistically. It supports the nervous system, promotes restful sleep, soothes skin, and brings emotional equilibrium. Suitable for daily use, for all ages (including children over 3 months), and across a wide range of applications.

⚡ Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) — The Action Oil

Spike lavender is the powerhouse of the lavender family. Its high camphor content (up to 20%) and significant 1,8-cineole levels make it fast-acting and penetrating. It is the go-to choice for acute, targeted situations: insect bites, minor burns, muscle tension, and respiratory congestion. Its action is rapid and pronounced — best used punctually and in small amounts. Not recommended for young children, pregnant women, or people with epilepsy due to its camphor content.

⚖️ Side-by-Side Comparison

Fine Lavender · Balance oil · Gentle & progressive · Daily well-being, versatile use

Spike Lavender · Action oil · Fast & powerful · Acute, targeted use

🌾 Fine Lavender Varieties: Population vs. Maillette

Within Lavandula angustifolia itself, two cultivar types stand apart — each with a distinct aromatic signature and therapeutic emphasis.

🌺 Fine Lavender Population — The Floral Benchmark

Grown from seed (non-clonal), Population lavender expresses the full genetic diversity of the species. This results in a richer, more complex olfactory profile — deeply floral, suave, and sweetly enveloping. Its linalool and linalyl acetate content tends to be higher and more nuanced, making it the preferred choice for deep relaxation, emotional support, and premium perfumery. The scent is softer, warmer, and more multidimensional.

🌿 Fine Lavender Maillette — The Reliable Classic

Maillette is a clonal cultivar — propagated by cuttings for consistency and yield. Its aromatic profile is floral but with a characteristic fresh, slightly camphorous note that gives it a crisper, more linear character. Highly stable batch to batch, it is widely used in diffusion, air purification, and as a natural insect repellent. Its reliability makes it a staple in professional aromatherapy and cosmetic formulation.

🔬 Aromatic Profile Comparison

Fine Lavender Population · Very floral, suave & sweet · Rich and nuanced · Soft and enveloping · Deep relaxation, emotional care

Fine Lavender Maillette · Floral with fresh camphorous note · More linear, stable · Herbaceous and vivid · Diffusion, purification, insect repellent

🧬 What Makes Fine Lavender Unique

Fine lavender’s therapeutic reputation rests on its biochemistry. Linalool (30–45%) exerts anxiolytic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects — confirmed in multiple clinical studies. Linalyl acetate (25–45%) amplifies the calming action and contributes the characteristic floral-fruity note. Together, they act synergistically on the central nervous system, making fine lavender one of the most scientifically validated essential oils in aromatherapy.

🌍 Altitude & Terroir Matter

True fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) grows above 800 meters altitude in the wild. Below that threshold, it hybridizes naturally with spike lavender to produce lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) — a distinct species with a higher camphor content and a more pungent profile. Altitude is therefore not just a geographic detail: it is a quality marker. The higher the cultivation, the purer and more delicate the oil.

💡 Did You Know?

The name lavender comes from the Latin lavare, meaning to wash, a reference to its historical use in bathwater since Antiquity. During World War I, it was also used for hygiene, linen disinfection, and the sanitation of care areas. This traditional use helped popularize the plant across Europe and cemented its antiseptic functions in modern aromatic practices.

😴 Lavender & Sleep — What the Science Says

Sleep disorders are extremely common: between 20 and 30% of French adults report insomnia, with a significant proportion suffering from chronic forms that impact quality of life. Fatigue, irritability, reduced concentration — sleep deprivation often becomes a long-term condition.

Among non-pharmacological approaches, fine lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most studied. Rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, it is used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, reduce the perception of stress, and improve sleep quality. Several clinical studies show that inhaling lavender essential oil can improve sleep quality — and sometimes duration — in elderly individuals as well as patients with sleep disorders associated with other conditions.

🔬 How Does Lavender EO Act on Sleep?

Available data suggest several complementary mechanisms:

• Action on the nervous system: linalool and linalyl acetate are thought to modulate certain neurotransmitters involved in anxiety, alertness, and sleep regulation (GABA, serotonin, noradrenaline, etc.).
• Mild anxiolytic effect: several studies show a reduction in subjective anxiety after inhalation of lavender EO, which can facilitate falling asleep.
• Improved sleep quality: some studies report better sleep continuity and fewer nighttime awakenings after diffusion or targeted inhalation of lavender.

In practice, lavender essential oil does not replace medical treatment for chronic insomnia, but it can be integrated into a holistic sleep hygiene routine — regular schedules, reduced screen time in the evening, a calm environment.

🌿 What Is Lavande Maillette?

Lavande Maillette (Lavandula angustifolia cl. Maillette) is a selected clone of fine lavender, recognized for the stability of its aromatic profile and its consistent yield. Its traditional properties — relaxing, soothing, cleansing, and healing — are close to those of fine lavender, while presenting a distinct olfactory signature marked by a light camphoraceous note.

🌱 What Is a Clonal Lavender?

Unlike population fine lavender — grown from natural seeds with varied profiles — Lavande Maillette originates from a single carefully selected plant, then reproduced by cuttings. This method guarantees consistent field behavior, a constant fragrance, and superior yield:

• A unique clone, multiplied by cuttings, genetically stable from plant to plant
• Consistent fragrance homogeneity from harvest to harvest
• Higher yield and regular field behavior (resistance, growth, early flowering)

This standardization explains why Maillette has become a reference variety for professional aromatherapy and certain industries (wellness, light perfumery, household products, etc.). The choice of a clonal variety became established from the 1950s-1960s onward, when distillers and wellness industries shifted toward more stable and reproducible essential oils.

📜 Origins of the Selection

Maillette was born from the desire to obtain a fine lavender that was more resistant, more productive, and more consistent than wild populations — responding to growing demand for standardized essential oils from aromatic industries, scented household products, and wellness artisans. Over time, its cultivation expanded across several French production regions, as lavender growers sought:

• A constant olfactory profile to meet industry specifications
• A more intensely blue flower
• Greater resistance to climate variations
• Higher yield per hectare

Its key advantages drove its success: superior yield for better farm profitability, fragrance homogeneity valued by distillers, a fresh camphoraceous note appreciated in diffusion, car fragrances, home perfumes and repellents, and good resistance enabling cultivation at medium and low altitudes. Today, Maillette is one of the major fine lavender clones, alongside varieties such as Matheronne and Diva.

✅ In Summary

Lavande Maillette, a stable clone of fine lavender, combines a balanced aromatic composition with a distinctive camphoraceous note. It has established itself in lavender cultivation thanks to its yield, resilience, and versatile uses: diffusion, relaxation, purification, and natural repellent. It is an interesting alternative for those seeking a fresher, more herbaceous fine lavender, while retaining the traditional properties of the Lavandula angustifolia species.
