Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is distinguished by its large green leaves — sometimes with a violet hue — and its robust, sturdy stems.

Clary Sage and Common Sage both belong to the Lamiaceae family — the same botanical family as Lavender, Thyme, and Rosemary. Both are plants of the Salvia genus with a fairly similar chemical composition, except when it comes to their essential oils, which have very distinct indications and — above all — very different safety profiles.

Beyond its potentially estrogen-like effect, Clary Sage essential oil (Salvia sclarea) is relatively gentle in use, valued for its relaxing and antispasmodic properties — particularly for menstrual discomfort and stress relief.
