✨ Local analgesic ++++ (menthol)

• Peppermint essential oil is a pain reliever through a "cooling effect." The menthol it contains specifically activates TRPM8 cold receptors involved in pain perception, thus causing an instant "cooling effect" and local anesthesia, hence its effectiveness in cases of muscle pain, bruises, neuralgia, and headaches.

✨ Tonic, general stimulant +++ (menthol)

• A general stimulant, peppermint essential oil invigorates the entire body in cases of fatigue. A neurotonic, it improves alertness, concentration, memory, and learning, as well as athletic performance. Although the mechanisms are not fully understood, The increased blood flow in the brain and the stimulation of the central nervous system via nicotinic receptors responding to acetylcholine could be the cause.

✨ Antispasmodic +++ (menthol)

• Peppermint essential oil limits digestive spasms by acting on the sphincter of Oddi and on contractions of the smooth muscles of the digestive system (bloating, stomach cramps, post-operative nausea). Its antispasmodic action is also beneficial in cases of muscle cramps.

✨ Antibacterial ++ (menthol))

• Peppermint essential oil is an effective antibacterial agent against numerous strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus (responsible for lung diseases), E. coli (responsible for digestive and urinary tract infections). The menthol it contains has the particularity of inhibiting bacterial growth. It alters the plasma membrane, thus modifying its permeability and leading to leakage of cellular material.

✨ Antiviral ++ (menthol)

• The antiviral action of peppermint essential oil is primarily due to menthol. Its action has been studied mainly on the herpes virus, whose replication it appears to inhibit.

✨ Antifungal ++ (menthol)

• Peppermint is active against many fungi, including those that cause lung infections, skin infections and candidiasis such as Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum gypseum, Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum, Epidermophyton stockdale, Candida diversa, but also those that can be found in food. It's important to note that the fungicidal action of menthol depends on its functional structure. Depending on these structural differences, its interaction with cells, and consequently its impact on fungal growth, will vary. Peppermint essential oil contains primarily L-menthol, one of the most effective menthol isomers.

✨ Antiparasitic ++ (menthol)

• Peppermint essential oil is an intestinal antiparasitic that acts primarily against shigellosis, an acute gastroenteritis.

✨ Anti-inflammatory ++ (menthol)

• Peppermint essential oil, and particularly menthol, inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory substances such as prostaglandin PGE-2, interleukin-IL-1-β, and leukotriene LTB-4. This anti-inflammatory action has been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.

• It facilitates the flow of bile into the intestine (cholagogue) and the secretion of bile by the liver (choleretic). Although the mechanisms are not clearly established, peppermint may stimulate the activity of certain receptors and enzymes involved in bile acid synthesis and the regulation of bile acid production.

Skin application — Dilute 1–3% in a carrier oil and apply to the temples, nape of the neck, or chest to relieve headaches, tension, and mental fatigue. Apply to the abdomen with gentle circular massage to ease digestive discomfort, bloating, and nausea. Apply diluted to muscles, joints, and the back to soothe pain and heavy legs. Use on insect bites for cooling, anti-itch relief.

Inhalation — Place 1–2 drops on a tissue or inhaler stick and breathe deeply to stimulate focus, memory, and concentration, or to combat mental fatigue and travel sickness. Effective for opening airways and easing nasal congestion.

Diffusion — Add 3–5 drops to a diffuser to purify and refresh the air, boost energy and alertness, and repel insects. Limit sessions to 30–60 minutes with ventilation breaks.

Steam inhalation — Add 2–3 drops to a bowl of hot water, cover the head with a towel, and inhale for 5–10 minutes to open airways and relieve respiratory congestion. Keep eyes closed.

Massage — Blend 2–3% in a carrier oil and massage into muscles, joints, tendons, and the back to relieve pain, stiffness, and post-exertion fatigue. Apply to the legs and feet to stimulate circulation and ease heaviness.

Compress — Add 3–5 drops to a bowl of cool water, soak a cloth, and apply to the forehead or affected area for headache relief, fever reduction, or localized pain and inflammation.

Cosmetic ingredient — Incorporate at 0.5–1% into facial serums, toners, or creams to tone, purify, and mattify oily and acne-prone skin, reduce pore appearance, and provide a cooling, antiseptic effect.

Capillary use — Add 2–5 drops to shampoo, conditioner, or a scalp serum to stimulate the scalp, regulate sebum, combat dandruff, strengthen hair, and add shine. Rinse thoroughly.

Nail application — Apply a diluted drop (1–2% in carrier oil) to nails and cuticles for its antiseptic and purifying properties.

Spray — Dilute in water or alcohol in a spray bottle to create a refreshing room or body mist, or an insect-repellent spray for skin and textiles.

Bath — Disperse 4–6 drops in a bath dispersant (e.g. neutral shower gel or milk) before adding to warm water. Avoid hot baths, as heat intensifies the cooling sensation. Relieves muscle tension and refreshes the body.

Ingestion / Food use — Being food-grade, 1 drop can be added to a teaspoon of honey, a glass of water, or a neutral food base to support digestion, freshen breath, and relieve oral discomfort. Only use food-grade essential oil and never exceed 1–2 drops per intake. Not recommended for internal use in children under 12.

Bad breath

• For adults and adolescents. For oral use, place 1 drop of Peppermint EO on a neutral tablet and let it dissolve in the mouth occasionally.

• For ages 6 and up. Place 1 to 2 drops on a neutral tablet, allow the tablet to absorb for a few minutes, and then let it dissolve slowly in the mouth. Use only occasionally.

• For ages 6 and up. Apply 1 to 2 drops of the following blend to the bites every 3 minutes until improvement, then 3 times a day until completely healed.

• For adults and children over 6 years old. Apply a few drops of the mixture to the gums up to 3 times a day for a maximum of 5 days.

• 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil.
• 10 drops of Lemon essential oil.
• 5 drops of Bay Laurel essential oil.

Dental neuralgia, Toothache, Toothache, Pulpitis

• For adults and children over 6 years old. For topical use, prepare a 10% mixture of peppermint essential oil in a black cumin seed oil (30 drops of essential oil in 9 mL of carrier oil). Apply a few drops of the mixture to the sore gum up to 5 times a day.

Bloating, Flatulence

• For adults and children over 6 years old. Topically: Dilute 1 drop of peppermint essential oil in 9 drops of carrier oil. Massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction. A single application is usually sufficient.
• For adults and children over 6 years old. Orally: Place 1 drop of peppermint essential oil on a neutral base (sugar cube, breadcrumb, neutral tablet, teaspoon of oil or honey, etc.) as needed. Do not exceed 3 drops per day. Take a break after 5 days of use.

• For ages 10 and up. Add the following essential oils to 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction. A single application is usually sufficient.
• 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil.
• 1 drop of Tarragon essential oil.
• 1 drop of Sweet Marjoram essential oil.

Muscle pain

• Suitable for ages 6 and up. For topical use, dilute 1 drop of essential oil in 9 drops of vegetable oil (Arnica oil macerate for example) and apply before and after physical exertion.

• Peppermint, Spearmint, Field Mint, Lemon Mint, Pennyroyal Mint, Long-leaved Mint, Sweet Mint? Which essential oil for which use?
• Although they belong to the same genus, Mentha, these four species are quite different, and their essential oils are therefore not the same.

• Mints belong to the Lamiaceae family, a charming family that also includes rosemary, sage, and thyme, for example. One of the characteristics of mint is its ease of hybridization. In most cases, simply planting two varieties of mint together is enough for a hybrid to appear.
• Some contain primarily menthol, while others are composed mainly of carvone. In both cases, the mint will not have the same properties in aromatherapy. But that's about all they have in common!
• Apart from Peppermint and Field Mint, which are similar, the other mint essential oils do not have the same properties.

• Although all methods of application are possible, it is contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women, babies, and children under 6 years old. Furthermore, it has numerous other contraindications and precautions that must be understood to ensure safe use.

Notice

• It is contraindicated in cases of severe hypotension.
• People with asthma should seek medical advice before using it.
• It is best to test the essential oil before using it (two drops in the crook of the elbow for at least 24 hours to check that there is no reaction).
• Also, be sure to follow the storage conditions carefully to avoid any risk of oxidation, which can cause the formation of sensitizing secondary compounds.

Medical advice

• The use of Peppermint essential oil requires medical advice for people with asthma and epilepsy, in cases of high blood pressure or other serious cardiovascular problems, liver disorders, gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, G6PD enzyme deficiency, or for long-term use.
  

Topical application

• Peppermint essential oil is a skin irritant, so it's best to dilute it to 10-15% in a carrier oil if applying it to a large area. For children aged 7 to 15, a 5% dilution is recommended.
• Do not use on broken or irritated skin. Absolutely avoid contact with the eyes. In case of accidental contact, rinse with a carrier oil; water is ineffective.

Ingestion

• Do not exceed 3 drops of essential oil per day. Not recommended in cases of gastroesophageal reflux, peptic ulcer, or bile duct obstruction (cholecystitis).
• Excessive ingestion may cause respiratory distress, convulsions, epileptiform syndrome, or a stupefying effect. There is a risk of hepatotoxicity at high doses and/or with prolonged use.
  

Diffusion

• It is best not to diffuse pure Peppermint essential oil (it is preferable to dilute it between 10 and 15% in other essential oils).

Endocrine influence

• Some works mention a hormone-like risk with, as a precaution, a contraindication in case of hormone-dependent disorders.

Contraindications

• Menthol may facilitate the penetration of anti-inflammatory and anesthetic drugs, and interferewith the effectiveness of certain heart medications. If in doubt, do not combine them.
• Caution should be exercised when taking antacids or anti-ulcer medications, or when undergoing treatment with a narrow therapeutic index, or in individuals taking multiple medications.
• Not recommended for use with homeopathic treatments.
