• Camphor rosemary essential oil must be used with caution: it cannot be taken orally or diffused without medical supervision, as it contains ketones (such as camphor) that make it strongly neurotoxic at high doses.
• Common rosemary, a small Mediterranean shrub, primarily produces 3 essential oils with different chemotypes (chemical compositions): cineole rosemary, used mainly for the respiratory tract; camphor rosemary, very useful after exercise; and verbenone rosemary, ideal for draining the liver and bile.

• Rosemary was very commonly used in antiquity to embalm mummies or as offerings to the gods. A sacred plant, it was also considered a symbol of love.
• Later, rosemary became an ingredient in the "Four Thieves Vinegar" — a maceration in vinegar of various plants including rue, wormwood, sage, rosemary, mint, cinnamon, and garlic. Antiseptic in nature, this vinegar was believed to ward off all ailments, even the plague.

💡 Usage Recommendations

Skin application — Dilute 1–3% in a carrier oil (e.g. jojoba or sweet almond) and apply to the targeted area. Ideal for muscle relief, joint support, and circulatory stimulation. Avoid application to the face.

Massage — Blend 2–3% in a carrier oil and massage into muscles, joints, legs, or the back. Particularly effective post-sport for physical recovery and to ease heavy legs or circulatory tension.

Diffusion — Add 4–6 drops to a cold-air diffuser and diffuse for 20–30 minutes per session. Supports mental clarity, memory, concentration, and an energising atmosphere. Do not diffuse continuously.

Inhalation — Add 2–3 drops to a bowl of hot water, cover the head with a towel, and inhale for 5–10 minutes. Alternatively, place 1–2 drops on a tissue and inhale directly. Effective for respiratory support and mental uplift.

Bath — Disperse 5–8 drops in a bath dispersant (e.g. neutral shower gel or milk) before adding to warm bathwater. Supports muscle relaxation and circulatory stimulation. Avoid hot baths, which may increase skin sensitisation risk.

Compress — Add 3–5 drops to a bowl of warm or cool water, soak a cloth, and apply to the affected area (muscles, joints, legs). Warm compresses support muscle relief; cool compresses help with heavy legs and circulatory tension.

Cosmetic ingredient — Incorporate at 0.5–1% into cosmetic formulations such as scalp serums, body lotions, or hair masks. Contributes purifying, toning, and scalp-stimulating properties.

💊 Recommended Dosage

Topical / Massage — 1–3% dilution in a carrier oil (1–3 drops per teaspoon of carrier). For localised muscle or joint application, up to 3% is appropriate for short-term use. For children over 7, limit to 0.5–1%.

Diffusion — 4–6 drops per session (20–30 min), maximum 3 sessions per day. Ventilate the room between sessions.

Inhalation — 2–3 drops in steam inhalation, 1–2 drops on a tissue. Limit to 2–3 sessions per day.

• There are more than 100 varieties of rosemary. Depending on where it is grown—and on factors such as humidity, soil, and sunlight—common rosemary yields several interesting essential oils, each with very different compositions and properties.
• Grown primarily in Morocco or Tunisia, common rosemary is rich in 1,8-cineole and yields “cineole-type” rosemary essential oil.
• Grown in Corsica, this plant is rich in verbenone, and its distillation produces rosemary essential oil known as “verbenone-type”.
• When grown in Provence, for example—where there is less sunlight than in Corsica or Morocco—pharmaceutical-grade rosemary produces an essential oil with a stronger camphor note, known as camphor-type rosemary essential oil.
