What is the difference between an essential oil and a hydrolat? Both are produced during steam distillation of plant material. The essential oil is the concentrated aromatic extract that separates from the water; the hydrolat is the aromatic water that remains. Hydrolats contain trace amounts of essential oil compounds and are significantly gentler — suitable for direct skin application without dilution, including on sensitive skin.

Do I need to dilute hydrolats before use? No. Hydrolats are ready to use directly on skin, as a facial mist, toner, or hair rinse. Some food-grade hydrolats — Rose, Peppermint, Thyme — can also be used in culinary preparations without further processing.

What is a chemotype and why does it matter? A chemotype identifies the specific biochemical profile of an essential oil from the same plant species. Rosemary Cineole, Rosemary Camphor, and Rosemary Verbenone come from the same plant but have distinct therapeutic properties. We specify chemotypes wherever relevant so you can choose with precision.

What does HEBBD / HECT mean? HEBBD (Botanically and Biochemically Defined Essential Oil) and HECT (Chemotyped Essential Oil) are professional quality labels used in French aromatherapy. They guarantee the botanical identity, geographical origin, and biochemical composition of the oil — a higher standard than simple “pure” or “natural” claims.

How should I dilute essential oils for skin use? A safe general dilution is 1–2% in a carrier oil — approximately 6–12 drops per 100ml. Some oils require lower dilutions.
